Let’s Talk About Refined Sugar

Let’s talk about sugar cravings— I haven’t had refined sugar in a few years. It’s not because I’m limiting myself so drastically, but rather because I just don’t crave it anymore. After doing the research, I realized just how bad refined sugar is for you and want to share with you why natural sugars are much better.

There are several things a sugar craving can indicate for you, like an underlying nutrient deficiency. Sugar cravings often can show you that you’re limiting your protein or fat intake too drastically. Because protein and fats slow the release of sugar into your bloodstream, when you don’t consume enough of them, your blood sugar can rise and fall at an abnormal rate. The result? Your body craves quick energy from sugar.

By no means should you start incorporating artificial sweeteners into your daily diets, as those can often be just as bad (if not worse) than classic refined sugar.

When I want something sweet, I reach for fruit plates (like this beautiful one @claire_grieve and I cut up poolside today), or foods that contain natural sugars (like sugars from dates, honey, coconut, maple, etc). As with most things in nutrition, moderation is key here. Once you cut out the fake crap, your body will love you in the long run— I promise!
