Discovering the importance of gut health has been a game-changer in my journey for overall wellness. As a kid, I struggled with acne on my face and also thought going to the bathroom every 3 days was normal. By prioritizing my gut health and making simple adjustments, I’ve experienced remarkable changes in my life. From fewer illnesses and improved mental clarity to better sleep, regular digestion, and reduced bloating, the impact has been truly transformative.
As I began my gut health journey, my doctor proposed that I do a GI MAP (it’s a stool test!) to really understand my gut and figure out what was off. I was struggling with bloating and constipation and learned I had a leaky gut. This GI MAP allowed us to figure out how I could heal my gut through food, lifestyle changes and supplements, rather than just guessing.
I also learned a lot about stress and anxiety and the effect it has on gut health and function. The gut, often referred to as our “second brain,” houses a complex network of nerves and neurotransmitters that communicate bidirectionally with our brain. This gut-brain axis means that emotional and psychological factors can influence our gut health, and vice versa. At the time, I was majorly stressed out and when reviewing my data after my GI MAP, realized I had to make major changes to not only my diet, but also my lifestyle.
This is what I’ve personally noticed since prioritizing my gut health:
Once I began prioritizing my gut health, I noticed a significant decrease in the frequency of illnesses. Strengthening my gut microbiome through simple dietary changes (limiting excess alcohol, gluten, sugar, artificial additives/preservatives) and lifestyle adjustments has boosted my immune system, making me more resilient against harmful pathogens. The result? Fewer sick days and a stronger defense against common illnesses.
The reduction in brain fog has been one of the most noticeable improvements since I started addressing my gut health. Previously, I often experienced mental sluggishness and difficulty focusing. However, by nurturing my gut, I’ve experienced a major shift in mental clarity. My thoughts are sharper, and I feel more present and alert throughout the day, allowing me to perform better in both work and daily activities.
Changes in my Sleep:
For years, I struggled with falling and staying asleep, leaving me tired and groggy each morning. However, by making improvements to my gut health, I feel I’ve unlocked the secret to restorative sleep. Balancing my gut microbiome has positively influenced my sleep patterns, allowing me to experience more restful nights. I wake up feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on the day.
Digestive Troubles and Digestive Issues:
Irregular digestion and bloating were persistent challenges in my life. I’ve tried everything under the sun to try to get a handle on it. However, by focusing on my gut health, I’ve found relief from these discomforts. Through mindful eating habits, incorporating a pre and probiotic (I like Seed!) and nourishing my gut microbiome, my digestion has become more regular. I experience fewer instances of bloating, enabling me to enjoy a more comfortable and balanced daily routine.
